Papua New Guinea photo expedition

The Korowai, also called the Kolufo, are a people (about 3,000) of southeastern Papua.Until 1970, they were unaware of the existence of any people besides themselves. The Korowai universe is filled with all kinds of spirits, some more personal of character than others and for Johan to enter some of the tribes was an interesting experience. Most of the tribes one can meet in Papua is more of an tourist attraction but since Johan has been there many times and got to know the people, they organized an expedition into the djungel of Papa. A journey back in time.
With respect to death and afterlife some tribes believes in the existence of a reciprocal type of reincarnation: those who died can be sent back at any time to the land of the living, by their kinsmen in the land of the dead, in order to reincarnate in a newly born infant of their own clan. Johan joined one of the rituals in the village and he made friends for life.

Papua New Guinea is a country in the Pacific Ocean, in a region described since the early 19th century as Melanesia. Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. According to recent data, 841 different languages are listed for the country, although 11 of these have no known living speakers. There may be at least as many traditional societies, out of a population of about 6.2 million. It is also one of the most rural, as only 18 percent of its people live in urban centres. The country is one of the world’s least explored, culturally and geographically, and many undiscovered species of plants and animals are thought to exist in the interior of Papua New Guinea.
